by Lila Johnson Then Mill Creek Garden Club President, Michael Crawford, in the capacity as a master gardener, volun- teered on family night at Challenger Elementary School, became acquaint- ed with the non-profit organization, Farmer Frog. She was awestruck by the vegetable garden Farmer Frog created at the school which is a hands on outdoor classroom to benefit school families. With the garden clubs successful Mill Creek Garden Tour, we had the money to give. Followed by research with founder Zso- fia Pasztor, the Mill Creek Garden Club Board awarded the non-profit organiza- tion $2,000 in February of 2017. This began the supportive relation- ship, thanks in great part to the success of our garden tour. It is a social out- ing, an opportunity to chat with other garden loving people on a sunny June afternoon. Most of the ticket price is profit which enables us to support Farmer Frog. We also support other organizations, such as the Hope Creek Charitable Foundation which oper- ates our Mill Creek Community Food Bank and gardening clubs at Jackson and North Creek high schools. Successive Mill Creek Garden Club Presidents and their boards have honored that Farmer Frog as- sociation and chose to direct funds to Olivia Park and Discovery Elementary schools, near Mill Creek. Past president Julie Jacobson and current president Lyndal Ken- nedy have been able to keep the grant awards ongoing with about $10,000 given to support Farmer Frog. We are proud of Farmer Frogs founder Zsofia Pasztors collabora- tion with the East-West Food Rescue which, because of COVID, is trucking discarded crops from eastern Washing- ton farmers to food banks in western Washington. Things like apples, pota- toes and onions are reaching families here. Although farmers were having to discard these crops, the organiza- tion tries to give them donations to at least cover their costs.

Fraud is big business and a glob- al network of criminals are actively preying on peoples fears and anxiet- ies about the coronavirus. Some of the most common schemes include unemployment fraud where criminals use stolen personal information to file bogus claims, fraud rings offering fake COVID-19 remedies or supplies, or so-called romance scams where perpetrators pretending to be a friend or loved one use online platforms to request financial assistance to help them through hard times. As we work together to contain the virus, here are a few steps that help prevent identity theft and fraud. Consider placing a security alert or credit freeze on your information. Each credit bureau allows you to place a free fraud alert or credit freeze on your credit report. A fraud alert lasts for one year and requires lenders to verify your identity before extend- ing credit. This will result in some ex- tra effort should you need to apply for credit in this time frame, but it can be worth it. If your identity has been sto- len, you can set up an extended fraud alert, which lasts for seven years. A credit freeze stops all access to your credit report unless you remove it. Review your credit report every year. You can request a copy of your free credit report at www.annualcred- itreport.com/. If you see something that you dont recognize, contact the creditor to get more information about what they are reporting to determine if it is legitimate. Place a Consumer Reported Iden- Make sure to notify all your finan- cial institutions, including those man- aging your retirement and investment accounts and take necessary precau- tions to protect your accounts. When it comes to protecting your personal information and finances, it is always better to err on the side of caution. If youre asked for money or information, and the request doesnt make sense or feels like somethings off, it probably is! Peoples Bank has a red flag reporting process designed to protect customers accounts, and we maintain a Fraud Investigations Department to stay ahead of rapidly evolving fraud and scam methods. We would be happy to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. tity Theft Security Alert with Chex- Systems. This notifies customers of ChexSys- tems (banks and credit unions, for example) that you have a security alert each time they submit a consumer account request with your information and lasts for one year. A seven-year alert is also available. Create an account with the Employment Security Dept. (ESD). Employees can create and verify their account without starting an unemploy- ment claim or taking any other action. How does this protect you? Only one account can be created per social secu- rity number. If youve registered and someone tries to create a new account fraudulently, they would be rejected during the account creation process. While these actions can help pro- tect you from fraud, heres what to do if you find that your personal informa- tion has been breached. File an identity theft report. The Federal Trade Commission offers an interactive reporting tool that provides guidance on how to report and what to do next. There are print- able checklists, sample letters, terms, definitions and much more. Even if you are not a victim, this is a great resource to build your understanding of identity theft and how to respond. Report unemployment fraud to the ESD. If you receive a notification from ESD regarding an unemployment claim you didnt file, you will need to notify them the claim is fraudulent. You should also inform your com- panys HR department if they havent contacted you already. Notify your banks.
